The Science Behind Entrainment
Brainwave Synchronization
According to the paper A Study of Brainwave Entrainment Based on EEG Brain Dynamics "Entrainment is the process whereby two interacting oscillating systems, which have different periods when they function independently, assume the same period. The two oscillators may fall into synchrony. In other words, Entrainment is the synchronization of a biological rhythm and an environmental cue"(Zhuang, T., Zhao,H., Tang, Z., 2009) This particular study focused specifically on entrainment through pre-recorded binaural beats, which have been used for many years to induce meditative states. DeepWave combines this well-established practice of brainwave modulation with neurofeedback and two sensory modes, light and sound, which work on separate systems in the brain.
Light and Sound Stimulation Effects
While the effectiveness of sound induced entrainment has been well studied, the combination of sound and light requires more research, despite many entrainment products being available commercially. Some preliminary research by M. Teplan, A. Krakovská, & S. Štolc did find long term increases in Alpha and Theta frequency brain activity with repeated sessions of entrainment. These ranges are associated with relaxation and stress relief, but also with deep meditation and a pleasant inward focus. Effective Relaxation Increases Wellbeing
While wellbeing is a purely subjective measure, many studies find that meditative type relaxation can be effective for stress-relief, addiction problems, mental health issues. While Deepwave does not intend to diagnose or treat any illness, it is hoped that that repeated use will have positive effects on brainwave patterns, mental state, relaxation and stress levels. Effects will vary, but the preliminary research shows positive effects from entrainment with very low risk. Senseworld Industries hopes that the project will stimulate more research on the effects of EEG enhanced entrainment.
